Adrian Rubin is a creative director from New York. Born in Beacon, he spent his early childhood enjoying the atmosphere of a small town that was only a few hours away from New York City where he presently resides. Most of his projects are based on word-of-mouth referrals as he freelances for businesses in the area of management, marketing, directing, and more. Besides working as an independent contractor, Adrian Rubin has experience in the field of customer service. Nowadays, his portfolio is filled with engagements that relate to business, entertainment/music industry, as well as many other subsectors of each.
1- Hello Adrian, can you please tell us a bit about you?
Absolutely! So, I am a natural-born New Yorker who has lived in this state ever since birth. I grew up in a small town in the so-called Dutchess County where the population did not even go above 15,000 people. After finishing high school, I decided to expand my horizons and pursue an academic career in larger cities. This eventually led me to visit the very epicenter of this state, New York City. Now, I live in Brooklyn and work as a creative director. Most of my work is based on long-term relationships with clients that I have started working with almost three decades ago. Besides work, I enjoy sports, movies, music, and almost anything that can take my mind off of my agenda for a few minutes.
2- What are your focus areas and why?
I mostly focus on directing and overseeing projects from start to finish. I tried working in many different roles as a freelancer since the opportunities are limitless. Ultimately, I came to a realization that I am most efficient when I do the broad planning and division of the final goal into minor milestones. Also, I enjoy helping other employees fulfill their duties as we create something from scratch.
3- How do you describe your freelancing journey in few words?
In a few words? That might be impossible. If I had to, however, I would describe it as a never-ending rollercoaster of fun engagements.
4- Where do you think your work is making an impact?
Mostly in the business field. I work with a lot of small businesses and sole proprietors who have entrepreneurial tendencies. Some of the recent projects that I completed were based on consulting. So, I would have to say that the area that has been affected by my input the most would have to be some subsection of business for smaller companies.
5- What is the biggest challenge you encountered while moving to New York to launch your business?
The competition. As you may know, New York City has a population of 8.5 million people boxed in a land size of 300 square miles. With such unimaginable density, I had to fight hard to establish a name for myself. Not to mention the skepticism that all new freelancer have to deal with, regardless of their profession. Overcoming those two must have been the hardest challenge in my entire professional life.
6- What the word “Creativity” means to you?
The ability to express my opinion or demonstrate my skills in a unique way. It also means the freedom to question some traditions and old-fashioned approaches that I deem obsolete.
7- Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
In all honesty, it really depends. I could remain exactly where I am as my life right now is very interesting. I have many clients that rely on my services and I never have a shortage of work. Also, I get to meet amazing people from all over the world every day. Still, things could come up and I may end up relocating. Although I doubt that a permanent relocation from the state of New York is in my future, I never question the ways that life works out. Who knows, I may end up living in California one day, right?
8- What can you tell young freelancers who are pursuing their dreams?
The beginning is always the hardest. When you start, your skills will be neglected as most people are unwilling to risk their projects with freelancers who do not have an established track record of success. I advise you to remain dedicated and trust the process. Once you finally start getting work, you will miss those idle days when all you could do is relax.
9- What are you most excited about at the moment?
The development of websites that promote freelancing. Although I will not name any particular examples to avoid giving away free publicity, there are many outlets that have been created over the past decade with a sole purpose of making it easier for freelancers to find work and people in need to find independent contractors. I personally used some of them a few times just to see the way that things are set up. I must say, I was not disappointed at all.
10- The last word or final thoughts?
Well, I definitely appreciate the opportunity to share my thoughts. So, thank you for the interview. Also, I want to say that people who might have more questions about the type of work that I do or want to be freelancers themselves should familiarize themselves with Google. Trust me, research is the best way to streamline your business and Google can be your best friend in these situations.
