Is Your Furniture Limiting Your Productivity?

When people talk about productivity, it is usually limited to calendars, mindset, and routines. While these are all vitally important to overall productivity, there are also environmental factors to consider. The most obvious one is the type of furniture that fills your environment.

Sleep Environment

Research facilitated by the National Institute of Health (NIH) has found up to 70 million adults in the United States suffer from sleep or wakefulness disorders and more than 1/3 of Americans get less than 7 hours of sleep per night. This is significant because research has also shown that sleeping less that 7-8 hours per night has been associated with health risks such as increased cardiovascular risk, decreased cognitive function, decreased efficacy of some vaccines, and an increased risk of developing insulin resistance and diabetes.

If sleep is so important, why do so many people fail to make investing in their sleep environment a priority? Studies have shown there are several key components to creating a nighttime environment that will lead to better sleep.

Studies have shown the most important factors in getting a good night’s sleep include the following.

  • A comfortable mattress
  • Comfortable pillows
  • Comfortable bedding
  • A quiet room
  • A dark room
  • Cool temperature
  • A clean room

The key to a great night’s sleep begins with the right bed and bedroom environment. If you have an old mattress or one that is not ideal for your sleep preferences, it will be difficult to get enough sleep. If you haven’t invested inadequate storage for your clothing and other possessions, it will be difficult to maintain a clean room. Sleep is the foundation for your productivity and as such must be prioritized.

Work Environment

The next environment that will directly impact your productivity is where you work. Some people may think this is only important for those who work at home, but in today’s always connected culture most people are spending at least some of their time at home working.

It’s possible to open up a laptop and briefcase at the dining room table but that doesn’t provide mental congruity. If you are working where you have family meals it will be more difficult to transition into the focused state which is critical for high-quality output. It will also make it more difficult to be fully present with family when the time has come to share a meal together.

If you have the space to set up a home office, that is fantastic. However, for those who only work from home occasionally, or who have limited space, it may not be an option. One way to take your work productivity to the next level is to invest in a comfortable desk and office chair that are used only for work. When you know that a designated space is designed to support your focus, creativity, and productivity then even the act of sitting down to work will become more efficient and enjoyable.

Recreational Environment

Finally, when you arrive home and have time to spend with friends and family it is important that you are comfortable and ready to engage with them fully. This could mean having a living room set that makes you happy to be home and eager to entertain or it could mean designing your dream dining room for hosting informal dinner parties.

The environment in your home is built on the furniture you choose. While it is not typically possible to purchase all of one’s ideal furniture upon moving it, it makes sense to make it a priority as the funds become available. Companies like Home Living Furniture have made it easy to window shop online and take the pressure off of going to visit stores to gather new ideas and figure out exactly what your stylistic preferences truly are.

It is important to recognize that not all furniture websites are created equal, it’s important to find one that is local so you can feel the items before you make a purchase. You may think the sofa looks perfect online but when you sit on it you feel tense and uncomfortable.

The furnishings you choose are directly tied to your level of productivity throughout the day. Once you realize how intrinsically your choices are linked to how well you sleep and perform your daily routine, it’s easy to see home decorating as a necessity rather than a luxury expense.
