Interview with Joel Oeiras, Entrepreneur and MR JOEL Founder

1- Hello Joel, can you please tell us a bit about yourself.

I am Portuguese and grew up in a city called Gouveia in Portugal. My first summer job was in a small restaurant as a waiter assistant. At 17 years old my best friend and I decided to go on an adventure and move to the UK. We had no agenda. This was without a doubt the best decision of my life. For the last 10+ years, I have been living in London where I have been able to get to know a variety of cultures and experience things that have helped me shape the person I am today. Every job I had, every person I have met has helped me grow and understand how business works. From customer service to tech, I believe I was able to absorb every little experience and up to this day, I still use it in everything I do.

2- What influences your work? What makes you want to wake up every morning?

My work alone is enough to make me want to wake up every morning. I love waking up and going through my to do list and organize my day. I am still a big fan of the old pen and paper. There’s some sort of satisfaction to add that tick to every point on your list. Accomplishing the smallest task to me is a motivation to move on to the next one. Think of it as a cycle. Social Media and everyday life are some of the key areas that influence my work and everything around it. In order to deliver great work, you need to find out what makes you interested and it’s by experiencing it that I know what works and doesn’t. I trust my gut feeling a lot to this day. I don’t think of my career as work though. When you’re passionate about your job and you will do anything you can for it to succeed, then it isn’t a chore for you, it’s more of a hobby, and I wake everyday looking forward to the new opportunities that come my way.

3- In terms of Marketing, what are your focus areas and why?

Our biggest focus is digital marketing and everything around it, Social Media being the key element. In this day and age, we live our lives through our devices and it’s so important for businesses to connect with their audience. Surprisingly there’s still a lot of companies out there who do not give as much importance to social as they should. Social actually gives you more results than any ad in a newspaper, magazine, tube or even on TV. Why? Because you can target your ideal customer, based on their demographic, location and interests. Also, the video is such an important tool and it’s something we are focusing on more and more. People always say that the new generation have a very short attention spam when it comes to imagery and videos, but what people need to realize is that if the content provokes some kind of emotion then you have grabbed their attention and you can then deliver your message/product through that. People react to their emotions.

4- Can you tell us more about MR JOEL?

MRJOEL is a global digital media agency with an editorial side to the digital world. We help businesses create and manage their company with the services we offer. We have clients worldwide and help companies and clients create content for their websites, business and social media platforms. Some of the content we create are websites, graphic designs, logo designs, digital marketing, newsletters and much more. We also create editorial content weekly, including interviews with influential bloggers, models, actors, make-up artists, dancers, stylists, designers and far more. As well as editorial content and digital services we also have a blog which includes articles about all different matters – Beauty, fashion, music, art, travel, just to mention a few. We share a variety of content including videos, images and more, some of which feature some of clients and partners. The company expands every single day, and there is always one motive – to get the talent of others noticed and publicised.

5- Where do you think you are making an impact?

I think we make an impact with all of our clients and also all the influencers we interview and work on a daily basis. Influencer Marketing are another of our biggest focus for the current and next year and it’s been great to get to know the amazing and talented bloggers, models and influencers out there. Every company starts somewhere, and it’s company’s like MR JOEL which help get brands noticed and get on their feet. We offer digital services that businesses need, such as web design, graphic design, logos, branding, etc.. All these aspects are informant to a company and we offer these to our clients, because we were all in their place once.

6- What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered while working on MR JOEL?

There were so many challenges involved. The biggest one is to manage everything, to make sure it all works and connects while making sure all of your clients are taken care of. My clients are my priority over anything else. If they are happy then I am happy. Time is definitely a challenge. I wish there was more hours in a day. I like to be ahead of deadlines so time is precious and I take and use it the best way I can.

7- Where do see the company in the next 5 years?

I want to create a space where talent is seen for their talent and not for their name or personal connections. Very often I come across incredibly talented people, but because they don’t have the means or connections that it takes, they don’t know what to do or how to get there. This is why I started the editorial content on MR JOEL. It’s to give a platform to talented individuals – more specifically creators – like bloggers, YouTubers, models, stylists, etc. to let the world know who they are and what they do and in a way give them a window to express that openly. So I see MR JOEL as a key destination for digital services and influencer content.

8- What can you tell young entrepreneurs who are pursuing their dreams?

Here is a 5 point list of a few things I live by everyday:

  • “Don’t leave for tomorrow what can be done today” – Work as hard as you can everyday. Even in those days that you don’t see the end of the tunnel believe me you will get there.
  • “If you work 100 hour weeks you will achieve in 4 months what it would take your competition 1 year to achieve” – Still related to advice number 1 and since I have heard this quote I relate more and more to it. If I wouldn’t have worked as many hours as I did so far I would probably still be designing my website.
  • Listen, reflect, change – Trust those around you that not only tell you the good, but also tell you the bad. Learn from those who knows best and then adjust that to your business needs. People who are narrow minded never leave the same cicle.
  • People don’t care as much about your business as you think they do.
  • No idea is too small or too big. If you have a great idea, or a great talent you should never think “it’s been done, so theres no point” – No one else can add the value and creativity to something like YOU CAN. So even something has been done you can do it 10 times better or different.

9- What are you most excited about at the moment?

I love how brands are getting more and more excited about working with talented individuals – specifically influencers – to help them grow their business and get them to be THE CREATORS. Influencers are basically the voice of the consumer and they are trusted by their followers. They know they are not just a face of that product, but are actually people who have tried them and are giving them 100% honest opinions. At MR JOEL we always make sure we only work with genuine influencers that care about the brands we work with and not just because they are getting paid to do it.

10- The last word or final thoughts?

I want people to think of MR JOEL as not just a business you go to if you want a digital service, but also a place to relax and get to know an amazing talent that its out there. We welcome feedback and are also looking for creative talent to join our team. We love graduates or people who are looking for some experience. Why? Well because they are full of passion and everyone is unique in their own way and have specific visions that can help shape up the future generations.
