Interview with Michail Dimitriou, Digital Marketing Consultant

1- Hello Michail, can you please tell us a bit about you?
Hi, my name is Michael and I am a digital marketing consultant. I am from Greece but I live and work in Malta, a small exotic island located in the Mediterranean Sea. I work for Think Design Ltd, one of the island’s leading digital agencies.
I moved here at the end of 2015 and I am loving it. In my free time, I like to read news stories, go sailing, do archery and go swimming.

2- What are your focus areas and why?
My main focus as a digital marketer is to increase the visibility of the rankings in a search engine results and the visits of a website. This can be done by methods and tactics that are referred as Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Also, I focus on advertisement methods such as Pay Per Click –  called Search Engine Marketing. In Google’s and Facebook’s advertising platforms, there are some quality factors that influence the cost of each advertisement. The interesting aspect of Search Engine Marketing is that It is not dependent only on money that one spends as in old traditional media but on many other factors such as relevant content and user experience. In this part of my job, I optimize the campaigns for the best performance. I love to follow the analysis – watch and track the results of each project, to calculate indicators (for example Return on Investment) and with this data to constantly evaluate the strategy.
As a hardcore man, I prefer to work in the hardcore fields like PPC Campaigns and SEO (that involve coding, marketing, and maths) than Social Media Marketing that is a much easier field.

3- What influences your work? What makes you want to wake up every morning?
From the first time I connected to the internet back in 1999, I created my first web page and started to promote it. Since then I have managed several websites for experimental and testing purposes. The good results, the incensement of visitors, the better ranking, and a “thank you” from clients and/or my director influences me. I love to wake up early every morning and have a cup of coffee while I am checking some statistics or reading news stories. I am trying to relax before a typical stressful day of a digital marketer. Another reason to wake up early is to avoid the traffic jams in Malta’s streets.

4- With the mobile first era, what are the new rules of a Digital Marketing Manager?
Nowadays the mobile technology penetration affects the whole digital strategy. Everything must be incredibly simple and easy for the mobile user. For example, if an e-shop is not mobile friendly the mobile user needs first to find the e-shop on his mobile device and after to order the product on a computer. That process is a huge disadvantage compared to a mobile friendly e-shop that from a user can easily order a product on a mobile device. That was an example only for design, now imagine everything involved including campaigns, web design, creatives etc. All objects must be user-friendly for mobile devices with different screen sizes.

5- Where do you think you are making an impact?
As an SEO expert, I am trying to “manipulate” the Google’s results. One of the aspects of my job is to use technology and marketing methods in order to increase the ranking and the visibility of our clients in Google for specific and generic search terms. I believe that I make a small impact there.  Also, I impact my friends by making them laugh a lot.
Besides that, for sure, I am making a big impact on local bars and parties every Friday by drinking and dancing…haha.

6- Can you tell us more about your work at Think Design?
Think Design is a leading global digital agency based in Malta with many projects in many significant industries. Every project is a challenge and requires unique marketing strategy. From the first moment that I received the proposal to work with Think until now I have felt the excitement – working with Think is a perfect experience, the working environment, the team, the flexible working hours. All of these factors combined make Think a perfect company to work for.

7- Where do see yourself in the next 5 years?
Usually, I don’t make long-term plans. No one can predict the future. For example, in 2015 I was living and working in my hometown in Thessaloniki Greece, I had an ordinary life, and after 3 weeks suddenly I relocated in Malta. If I think with current data, I see myself still in Malta with a new better car for sure, and who knows, maybe married, as currently I, am single.

8- What can you tell young Digital Marketers who are pursuing their dreams job?
The most important thing for a digital marketing is always to test new things and practices. I advise not to wait for a client and then to try a new platform or method, or technology etc, but to give a try before the client comes, so you will be already prepared and with experience on the certain method. A personal example: I didn’t have in the past any client that wanted to be advertised in search engine, Bing. I didn’t have any experience on Bing Platform, so I created a campaign for myself in order to learn this platform. Later, a client of mine asked me if I can create a campaign for him in Bing, so I had already the experience to do that.  I spend a lot of money in order to test and learn new things, but with that way, I am always a moving forward. So young digital marketers: promote yourself for learning the purpose, and you will never regret.

9- What are you most excited about at the moment?
I am excited since I moved to Malta. Here I am on vacation all year long, I live 3 minutes from the beach and I can use the communal swimming pool of the complex I live in. After work, I, enjoy a cocktail by the pool. In that great environment, I am more productive at my work, and that excites me every day.
