1- Hello Rick, can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m a husband, father of two and entrepreneur. A Minnesota native transplanted to San Diego just over 15 years ago. In my late twenties, I started my first company which was an eCommerce retailer and I became addicted to the challenges and opportunities of online marketing. Over the years I’ve started a few businesses all with a heavy online focus. Today I’m the Founder & CEO of SlideGenius which is a Presentation Design Studio that helps executives and corporations tell their stories better, visually.
2- What are your focus areas and why?
From a personal standpoint, I try to daily focus on my “Five F’s.” Family, Friends, Finance, Fitness and Faith. Usually one or another is potentially out of alignment which will always be the challenge but when they’re in sync good things happen.
3- How do you describe your journey in few words?
4- Can you tell us about your business “SlideGenius”?
SlideGenius is a creative agency that is primarily focused on providing high-quality presentation design for business executives. We’ve been formally in business for almost 6 years servicing over 1,500 global clients with a staff of just under 80 employees.
5- Where do you think you are making an impact?
Today I spend about 30% of my time developing our managers. Seeing them evolve both as a person and as a leader has been incredibly rewarding for me.
6- What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered while working on “SlideGenius”?
Scaling service based businesses can be challenging because of the constant balancing of financial capital and human capital. Most of the challenges we’ve faced were a direct result of requests by our existing clients to expand and take on more volume.
7- Where do you see the company in the next 5 years?
We’ve been working on our internal processes and building a software platform called SlideSuite that is focused on enhancing the presentation design process. I’d like to see SlideGenius grow into an enterprise design platform solving the speed and quality challenges for larger organizations with SlideSuite being the underlying technology.
8- What can you tell young entrepreneurs who are pursuing their dreams?
Dream big and get out there and take swings. When you take the leap of moving down the entrepreneurial corridor just keep going because that next door may open that will change your trajectory and maybe your life.
9- What are you most excited about at the moment?
We’re based in San Diego with a significant amount of our work coming out of New York. We’re actively looking for talent which will lead to a New York City office by 2018.
10- The last word or final thoughts?
Set goals for yourself personally, professionally and for the business. Create, review and edit them monthly, quarterly and yearly.
