Interview with Sandy Gholston, PR and Marketing Expert & SG3 Communications Founder

1- Hello Sandy, can you please tell us a bit about you?
Absolutely, it’s my pleasure. Communication has been a passion of mine for more than 20 years. It’s not cliché to say that I live it and breathe it. I have 10-plus years of professional, award-winning journalism experience, at a daily newspaper, where I did a lot of almost everything. Additionally, I have more than 10 years of professional award-winning experience in marketing, public relations, social media and website management, at my alma mater, Ferris State University (Michigan). Also at the university, I co-host a series of workshops to help professionals better understand social media and how best to leverage it to maximize benefits. All of this has set the stage for the next big step. After months of research and additional preparation, I founded SG3 Communications, as an entrepreneur, in Summer 2017. SG3 Communications is a full-service marketing, public relations, and social media agency. As if that is not enough … on the side, I have spent more than a decade as one of the radio/TV broadcast voices for our university’s football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball teams. I keep myself quite busy, but it’s a happy busy.

2- What influences your work? What makes you want to wake up every morning?
Social media has never been more important. Its significance is only going to increase, for brands and for businesses. I see many small businesses, and bigger businesses, that can benefit from the professional services my agency provides. Being committed to high-level client service motivates me. Service motivates me. That’s part of the reason I am engaged in significant campus volunteer work. Each day, for me, is a new opportunity to empower, inspire and uplift people. Each day is a blessing and a responsibility – a responsibility to make the most of the gift of life, a gift renewed each morning.

3- In terms of Marketing, what are your focus areas and why?
Our focus is simple. We assess the current situation, develop a tailor-made plan for our client, execute the agreed-upon plan and evaluate it to break down and understand the results. One size does not fit all. Each client and brand are special and unique. We focus on social media, brand management, crisis communications, internal communications and web development. Our services, however, are diverse and extensive. We know our clients require a range of skills. We must be nimble enough to jump from one client to the next while providing top-flight service, no matter the circumstances.

4- Can you tell us more about “SG3 Communications”?
SG3 Communications is a small company dedicated to helping businesses successfully communicate. We are excited about our future and the marketing, PR and social media work we are going to do for our clients. We want clients that put out first-class work and expect first-class results. This is what we do. We work for our clients in a way that is comprehensive and cost-effective. We know small businesses have their hands full with day-to-day operations. This is where we enter the picture. We want to partner with motivated businesses for a team effort that maximizes results. Together, we will work to achieve collaborative success.

5- Where do you think you are making an impact?
Our biggest impact is helping small businesses utilize professional public relations and social media services to function with a skill-level that is on par with the big businesses. We want to provide a vision that leads to a blueprint for client success. We’re also excited about our new blog. It is gaining traffic and provides helpful tips brands and businesses will find beneficial. We’re also launching a newsletter that people can sign up for on our website.

6- What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered while working on your last projects?
Getting started was a major challenge. There are so many pieces of the puzzle that must be in place. One of our major challenges is educating people about social media ROI (return on investment). A professionally-run social media presence can yield positive results that strengthen brands and businesses. A non-existent social media presence, or one that is poorly run or inadequately maintained, can damage a business or brand. Having hosted social media workshops, for professionals, I know the challenges as well as anyone. We welcome taking on these challenges. We know how to make the case for the power of social media. There’s nothing more fulfilling than working with people and seeing the proverbial light bulb turn on – the moment when they get it.

7- Where do see yourself in the next 5 years?
The best is yet to come. Five years from now, SG3 Communications will be an even greater resource for small businesses determined to excel, even with a limited budget. We expect to be working with larger businesses, too. We look forward to a future expansion of staff and services. We have professionals all over the country who have inquired about working with SG3 Communications. The goal is to make SG3 Communications a name businesses and people know and trust.

8- What can you tell young internet marketers who are pursuing their dreams?
I encourage students to know their value and to begin developing their brand sooner rather than later. It’s more important than ever to gain experience at a younger age. The job market is highly competitive. Be a lifelong learner. Study, study, study. Be a sponge – absorb every bit of knowledge possible. Learn from others, good and bad, to shape the person and professional you desire to become. I further tell our students to pursue jobs that help them grow and to pursue a diverse range of internships that will make them more marketable upon graduation. Have a plan. Have short-range and long-range plans that put you on a path of growth and professional development. Envision what you want to become and work relentlessly to turn your vision into reality.

9- What are you most excited about at the moment?
SG3 Communications is in its infancy, with its best days ahead. Social media, as an example, is constantly changing. We’re keeping up with those changes and trends to best help our clients stay ahead of the game and ahead of competitors. When we win, our clients win. When our clients win, we win.

10- The last word or final thoughts?
We look forward to working with passionate clients who want the best for their brands and businesses. We offer a broad range of services suited for businesses of all sizes. Businesses owners and men and women developing brands deserve an agency ready to work with them through thick and thin.
