Q. Hello Sarbani, can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
A. My name is Sarbani Bedi. I’m originally from Delhi, India and have been living in New York for about 20 years. I’m the founder and CEO of Sarbani New York.
Q. What are your focus areas and why?
A. Modern Indo-Western jewelry, accessories and statement pieces. It’s an underserved segment in North America and through SNY I’m able to address that need.
Q. How do you describe your journey in few words?
A. As a native of India, I’ve seen first hand how South Asian fashion trends have evolved through the years along with an increase in demand on a global level. Unfortunately, boutiques are limited in their reach and the popular eCommerce destinations are burdened with a lack of quality control, long lead times and a poor overall customer experience. After extensive research and travel, I’ve successfully identified designers who share my vision and partnered with them to bring their lines to the North American market.
Q. Can you tell us about “Sarbani New York”?
A. www.sarbaninewyork.com is an online destination for Indo-Western jewelry, accessories and statement pieces from top designers in South Asia. We carry physical stock and can deliver all of the items on our site within a few days. In the US, our featured designers can only be found at SNY so our customers can be assured they are receiving truly unique pieces that are sure to please even the most discerning eye.
Q. Where do you think you are making an impact?
A. The response to our site has been overwhelmingly positive. In fact, I may have even underestimated just how many people were struggling to find quality goods in the US, online or otherwise. That feeling of frustration is all too familiar so in that sense, I’m pleased that I’ve been able to help people find what they’ve been looking for.
Q. What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered while working at “Sarbani New York”?
A. The timezone difference between NY and Asia is always a challenge and has to lead to me keeping a rather interesting schedule. Aside from that, I’ve been very fortunate to have such tremendous partners, both from a product perspective and in the various support roles.
Q. Where do you see the company in the next 5 years?
A. Aside from standard growth and revenue goals, I’d like to see SNY become THE destination for this category, not only for consumers but for designers looking to expand their reach. I’m able to provide a turnkey solution for anyone looking to enter the US without the usual headaches that come with establishing your brand in a new market.
Q. What can you tell young entrepreneurs who are pursuing their dreams?
A. It’s certainly a lot of work! But the reality is, so is anything that’s worthwhile. If there’s something you have a passion for and there’s an opportunity to pursue it professionally, then you should certainly do so. There will be setbacks, challenges and occasionally you’ll feel like throwing in the towel. Just try to find a balance between patience and persistence so you’re prepared mentally. The rest will fall into place.
Q. What are you most excited about at the moment?
A. We’re launching a bridal collection which I’m very excited about. There are some absolutely stunning pieces that I cannot wait to share. Our designers are amazing!
Q. The last word or final thoughts?
A. I encourage everyone to check out our page. We’ve got some interesting new features, including our Goddess of the Month where we’ll share the stories of truly remarkable, everyday women who otherwise wouldn’t receive the notoriety they deserve. I also plan on incorporating various charitable causes to our website, primarily for animals and rescue organizations. We’re looking forward to the future!
