1- Hello August, can you tell us a bit about yourself
I’m August Erickson and I’m currently a junior marketing major at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.

2- How would you describe a “Social Media Strategist” in a few words?
One who helps clothing lines, musicians, and various startups build an online presence via social media.

3- How did you first get into Social Media strategy?
I started while I was in high school, by reaching out to literally hundreds of companies, attempting to get my foot in the door and eventually manage their social media outlets. A couple of these companies were actually crazy enough to trust a 16-year-old with their social media outlets and over the next couple of years I invested every ounce of energy I had into making their social media outlets as effective and efficient as possible. Once I built a name for myself in the field of social media marketing the tables turned and companies started coming to me!

4- What are your focus areas and Why?
My specialty is with Twitter and Instagram. I like to focus on these two platforms because they’re much more accommodating to ‘gorilla style’ marketing.

5- We all want our website or product to get found and shared on Social Media. What are the recent trends in SM Optimization?
Trends constantly come and go, however, a good habit to keep in order to guarantee a strong presence on social media is consistent content. Make sure you’re constantly providing new material to keep your followers engaged and interested in your product/service.

6- What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered while working with companies to define their online marketing strategy?
The biggest challenges I’ve faced are the constantly changing rules of social media. Social media platforms change their policies, such as how many users you can follow an hour, very often and this can make it difficult to meet promised quotas. In order to adapt to these changing policies I have to always be aware of what’s happening in the world of social media and make sure I stay up to date with all policy/platform changes.

7- Where should a blogger or small business start when developing an online marketing strategy?
They should study their competitor’s social media outlets to see what they’re doing right and where improvements can be made. From there, they should map out and implement a solid marketing plan going forward.

8- How do you think online marketing has changed over the last few years?
In my opinion, the most obvious change is the rise in ‘gorilla style’ social media marketing. The days of paying for ad campaigns are coming to an end as businesses are changing their focus to obtaining an organic following rather than one they paid for.

9- What tips would you give to anybody who is looking to get started in Online Marketing field and what do you think are the most valuable skills required when working on it?
Don’t fear failure, embrace it. Let your failures motivate you and take every mistake as a learning experience. The most valuable skills required, in my opinion, are the abilities to multi-task and constantly keep a professional image.
