1- Hello Shinya, Can you please introduce yourself?

My name is Shinya. I have been working in digital marketing for 2 years and I am the founder and owner of the search engine optimization (SEO) website, “Search Engine Theory”, which provides tips to help Japanese business owners increase traffic to their websites. My background in digital marketing started when I was still in Japan, working as a blogger. Eventually I left Japan to study Digital Marketing at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), where I gained interest particularly in SEO.

2- What is your area of focus, and why?

I focus on Search Engine Optimization, since there is little to no formal SEO education or resources available in Japan. In Japan, we are not taught about Search Engine Optimization, as this is something that we would have to learn on our own, through trial-and-error, which could potentially take long periods of our time. From what I learned at UC Irvine, I seized the opportunity to build a website that could provide essential and practical SEO tips to help Japanese bloggers boost their SEO.

3- How would you describe “Search Engine Theory” in your own words?

Ethical SEO services in an online world that’s filled with Spam.

4- What kind of impact or outcome are you trying to achieve?

By sharing and teaching SEO information, I am trying to fill the gap in knowledge with which Japanese bloggers are faced. For example, a couple of days ago, Google did a huge update, which caused drastic changes for keyword rankings in Google. Unfortunately, many of my followers tweeted this major Google update killed a lot of traffic they used to have on their websites.  They do not know exactly what happened to them and how they can bring back their traffic to their web pages; so, I shared many of thoughts from SEO experts from around the world to try to alleviate their frustrations.

5- And what does the word “Entrepreneurship” really means to you?

Because I believe that a business is meant to help people faced with a  problem by providing a means to a solution, “entrepreneurship” to me means identifying what and how people are struggling, figuring out what they want versus what they need, and then figuring out how to procure or achieve these things. The key to a success is that you make a lot of effort to meet their needs, and then…

6- Where do you see the yourself in the next 5 years?

I hope to succeed in SEO, specifically with YouTube, and I also hope to be a brand creator.

YouTube has been gaining popularity where users are utilizing it for information, both business and leisure.  I believe that YouTube is actually the second largest search engine in the world. I want to jump on the YouTube bandwagon and produce noteworthy content for my users to watch. I know Google and YouTube are totally different and I know that I cannot use SEO tactics for YouTube, but it is a challenge I hope to pursue.

7- If you could turn the time, what would you love to change in regards to your career?

I would dive into computer science and would like to work for Google especially for their Search Engine department. Google does not reveal their algorithms so we do not really know exactly what is going on with how Google does what it does. We learn a lot from trial-and-error. I would be happy if I got an opportunity to work with a search engine algorithm team at Google, figuring out how and why search results are they way they are, and finding ways to improve them.

8- What is the “one-word” advice you will give to our readers when it comes to succeeding and especially the ones who are just starting?

Perseverance.  Efforts are such an important thing to become successful in your field. For example, in terms of SEO, your efforts do not bring a huge success in the short term. It is Google that determines who should be within top 5 in a Google search. Google has to deal with millions of millions of pages so that it takes a lot of time to get the desired result into the top results, or “the first page of results”. Sometimes it takes a couple of years before your articles appear within the top page in Google. 99% of people can not keep doing because they do not see a result within a short term and figure out it is not worth spending their time for nothing.  You might miss out on a great opportunity if you do not take the time to fortify your web presence.

9- What are you most excited about at the moment?

I feel happy when I get a message from my clients saying that they start getting traffic from Google searches. Many of my clients are not companies but individual bloggers and personal business owners, so it is much more difficult for them to get a good result with a small amount of money and a little bit effort. One of my clients achieved 100,000 traffic per month within 6 months of when he started his website.

Through my SEO career, that was the most exciting moment I have and at the same time I got confidence as a SEO consultant.

10- The last word or final thoughts?

I will keep learning practical SEO tips and trying to convey them with my audience. As an SEO Analyst, It is my responsibility to increase the chances of a person’s content appearing first in search engines. Hopefully I will become a SEO expert within 3 years. Thank you for giving me an great opportunity of sharing my thought for SEO. If you have any questions, please contact me at Search Engine Theory
