Hello Blake, can you please tell us a bit about you?
My name is Blake Rubin and I am a professional photographer. I have been doing photography my entire life. Photography is something that I hold dear to my heart and it is something that I look forward to doing every day. I learned the importance of photography whenever I was very young. I did not have the social skills required to hold regular conversations with the other kids in school. However, my life would change whenever I would get my hands on my very first camera.
I started taking pictures of everything and anyone I could look at. I would soon discover the power of photography and how it can help us see life from a different perspective. I knew that this was something that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I have spent many years learning this craft and I hope that it shows in my work.
What are your focus areas and why?
As I mentioned before, photography is my area of focus. One of the most rewarding things about my job is the fact that I can help people see the world from a different perspective. There was a recent project that I did that was maternity based. I helped a couple experience the process of having a child from an outside perspective. It was truly a rewarding experience that made all parties involved very happy. My goal in life is to make people happy through my work. I hope that I have accomplished that thus far.
How would you describe “The Blake Rubin Foundation”?
I would describe it as an opportunity for struggling students. I know what it is like growing up in a lower-middle-class family. While we didn’t live in poverty, we most certainly went without necessities from time to time. I wanted to make a difference in the world by starting this foundation. We have made incredible strides in giving students the opportunity to work towards financial opportunities that can be used for education.
Where do you think it’s making an impact?
I believe that our foundation is making an impact on students who come from lower-middle-class families. Many of these students will not have an opportunity to make it to university after they graduate high school. They will find jobs and simply find themselves struggling to survive financially each month. We have heard great things so far about our foundation and how it has given some students the financial boost that they needed to continue their education.
As a travel photographer, do you think flexibility is an essential part of the game?
Absolutely. I believe that all photographers must be able to be flexible if they wish to remain relevant. What’s popular now will not always be popular tomorrow. We must constantly learn new techniques that will allow us to improve our work and give the people what they want.
What advice would you give to young people just starting out and hoping to make it in the industry?
Don’t give up. There will be times that you will experience failure. It is important to understand that working professionally in any creative field takes a lot of time. They are very small industries that do not experience turnover. However, your break will come if you keep putting the work in. Always learn and continue to make connections at every given opportunity.
Do you find as an expert, that you enjoy the challenge of the industry being complex with the game rules are always changing?
I love a challenge. I am always trying to improve my work by any means necessary. The photography industry is a complex niche that requires photographers to utilize critical thinking skills. Develop your problem-solving skills and you will go far in this industry.
If you could turn the time, what would you love to change in regards to your career?
While I do love what I do, I would most certainly like to give film making a shot in another reality. Film making is an interesting niche that allows an individual to tell incredible stories through your camera lens. I have always been intrigued by what some film makers are capable of. However, I would have to spend a lifetime perfecting that craft. I am quite comfortable where I am now.
What are you most excited about at the moment?
I am most excited to meet new people. You never know who you are going to meet whenever you attend business networking events.
The last word or final thoughts?
You can only be good at something if you love it. Don’t waste any time doing something that you do not enjoy. Find out what you love to do as soon as possible and your quality of life will vastly improve.
