1- Hello Oisin, can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Oisín McGrath, I’m from Clarecastle Co. Clare. I graduated with a 1 st Class Honours Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Limerick, during which I spent a year working as an engineer with Airbus in their factory in Toulouse.
After graduating, I joined the Irish Air Corps as a Cadet in 2002. My career in the military has given me opportunities to perform some amazing flying roles such as tactical flying with our special forces troops, carrying out critical air ambulance flights and flying the police helicopter for a number of years. Today my role is to train the next generation of helicopter pilots for the Irish Air Corps.
Away from aviation I am a keen sportsman, swimmer, surfer, triathlete. I have competed in international lifesaving competitions, winning European and World medals.
My 18 years of experience in aviation, and my passion for success, is what I bring to the world of unmanned aviation. I am committed to ensuring drones find their place within aviation and that their applications are valued.

2- What are your focus areas and why?
The FlyRyte team are the most experienced drone training professionals in Ireland and our enthusiasm for all things aviation is infectious.
Our focus is on providing the most comprehensive training program possible. Beyond the course we provide support to our students when they require us. This is what differentiates us, we not only educate the drone community, we are part of the drone community.

3- How do you describe “FlyRyte” in few words?
It is difficult to describe FlyRyte in few words, but if i had to it would be energetic and innovative.

4- Where do you think you are making an impact?
FlyRyte is making an impact on every facet of drone training in Ireland. Our team have been involved in the process of drafting the regulations, designing Ireland’s most comprehensive theoretical training programme and testing drone operators.
We are making sure that Ireland’s drone industry continues to expand, safely, as it explores its potential.

5- What are some things that most people don’t know about your job?
Most people don’t realise the amount of work that goes into designing the courses we provide. From research, to preparing lectures, to producing the comprehensive manuals we provide to our students.
On the front of these manuals you’ll find the text “Knowledge Enables Capability”. We are passionate about providing each of our students with the knowledge and training to enable them to realise their potential.

6- Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
We in FlyRyte are an ambitious bunch. Our plan, in 5 years, is to provide an internationally recognised course, teaching EASA standard material to operators of unmanned aircraft of all sizes.

7- What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered while working on “FlyRyte”?
Our military background tends to make us look at challenges a little differently. Sure, there have been difficulties along the way, but each challenge is an opportunity to solve a problem and develop the team. We’ve learned a lot about business, the drone industry and ourselves along the way.
We wouldn’t change a thing!

8- What can you tell young people who are pursuing their dreams?
For anyone who is pursuing a dream, it is important to know that few people will share your vision at the start. This is the most delicate phase in the process. If you have an idea and you have thought it out systematically, do not let anybody’s indifference put you off pursuing that dream.
The second thing to realise is that failure provides the biggest opportunity to learn about yourself, as long as you are honest with yourself when exploring the reasons why you failed.

9- What are you most excited about at the moment?
The drone industry is one of the most exciting industries worldwide to be involved in. We in FlyRyte are excited about exploring new applications for this equipment and we look forward to seeing our students ensure that the industry’s potential is realised.

10- The last word or final thoughts?
The FlyRyte team is a dedicated group of professionals, with a combined military aviation experience of over 66 years. Our courses are designed to impart knowledge and encourage student participation, something our instructors really enjoy. We are committed to providing the best value drone training with a special emphasis on supporting our students after they have qualified.
We have watched the drone industry expand at a phenomenal rate, we are proud to have been a part of that growth and we are excited for what is to come!
