Interview with Peter Giammarco, Founder at Shimmer Technologies

1- Hello Peter, can you tell us a bit about yourself
I grew up in Cranston, Rhode Island, USA and have been passionate about technology since I was a teenager. I currently reside in West Warwick, Rhode Island. From an athletic perspective I was a long distance track runner and played ice hockey. My other various interest include hiking, kayaking, comic book collecting, film, travel, and music. My favorite place that I have traveled to so far was London, England.

2- How would you describe a day at “Shimmer Technologies” in under few words?
A typical day at Shimmer Technologies varies depending on the workload mix. In general it normally consist of managing clients social media, managing multiple website projects, creating web design mockups, updating WordPress sites, testing clients websites, or developing/updating WordPress themes.

3- How did you first get the idea to start “Shimmer Technologies”?
While working toward my BA in Web Design & Development at Johnson & Wales University I began to develop the idea that ultimately evolved into Shimmer Technologies. I was inspired by the unlimited potential that the world of internet commerce offered anyone with the entrepreneurial inclination to pursue it.

4- What are your focus areas and Why?
When I began my business I combined computer support with the web business in order to jump start the revenue. Now it is exclusively dedicated to Web Design, Development, and Internet Marketing. This directly aligned with my vision and passion and I will continue to build the business from this foundation.

5- How do you differentiate yourselves from your competitors?
Obviously there are many companies that can offer all or some of the services Shimmer provides. Many potential clients currently are/or considering integrating this work “in house”. Our goal every day is to exhibit to our current and future clients that we are the most cost effective way to enable them to deliver their message to their targeted customer base. Our business model is keyed to user experience and our commitment to making sure the customer is always satisfied. We utilize a disciplined four phase process that in summary entails research, creativity, technical elements and finally a summary review to insure all needs are met. We keep the customer updated during this entire process. Our services also include free consultations, 24 hour support services, and training.

6- We all want our website or product to get found and shared on Social Media. What are the recent trends in SM Optimization
The trend in mobile devices has obviously had a big impact on social media and how we use it, so it is important to keep track on how well client Social Media posts are ranking on different devices. Video marketing is another huge trend that will continue to increase in the years to come. The trend for automation is also growing, scheduling your social media posts to post at set times throughout the day, month, or year is critical. Local optimization is another big trend, it is an important factor for how well Google ranks your site and for SM optimization.

7- What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered while working with companies to define their online marketing strategy?
One of the biggest challenges I encountered while working with companies to define their online marketing strategy are narrowing down the best keywords to use. Some want to use to use words that are too far out of reach for their website to get a high ranking. Another challenge is insure they use their social media on a consistent basis. This often requires an investment in time or people to actively manage the postings and general activity via Twitter, Facebook, etc. This is critical to drive traffic to their site.

8- What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered personally as Entrepreneur?
Probably the biggest challenging is leveraging time. As a sole working proprietor I need to make sure I properly prioritize the business activity to insure my client’s expectations are always exceeded.
Another challenge is to always be in step with the dynamic environment that is the world of Web design and utilization. Our clients expect and are entitled to nothing less.

9- What tips would you give to anybody who is looking to get started in the internet marketing field?
If someone is looking to get started in the internet marketing field, I would suggest they need to make sure they learn the basics of on-page and off-page SEO and how to use social media properly to generate likes and followers. There are many books and resources available. Two good books I recommend are “SEO Made Simple” and “Likeable Social Media”.
