1- Hello Simon, can you please tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi, I’m Simon I’m the founder of Simon’s Online Marketing Kft., a Budapest based media company.
Interesting facts about me:
● I was born in a communist country, in the USSR
● My parents were really poor and only had high school diplomas, and we lived in public housing.
● I have learned to speak English when I was around 9, watching TV, Cartoon Network (I’m not a native English speaker)
● I had to miss out one year to go to work abroad (in the Netherlands and in Germany, working in factories, sometimes 50+ hours per week) to get enough money to pay for my college tuition.
● I own and operate my own company since I’m 26.
2- What are your focus areas and why?
I focus on so-called “difficult niches” and create ethical and professional blogs in these categories, where businesses mindful of their reputation can advertise. I hope to make a difference and change the seedy image of these niches by focusing on responsibility, safety and by providing genuinely useful information to my visitors.
3- How do you describe your “Simon’s Online Marketing Kft” in few words?
Professional, growing, strong and efficient top-down management and a strong focus on ROI.
4- Where do you think you are making an impact?
By focusing on ethical marketing I have already made headlines and I was mentioned by various online marketing publications and have talked to many bloggers. I’m slowly influencing other affiliate bloggers to turn away from black hat SEO and unethical marketing practices. We also regularly donate part of the company’s revenue to charity (using Kiva mostly).
5- What are some things that most people don’t know about your journey?
People usually don’t know, that I started my business with only a laptop, and only enough money to pay for rent, till the end of the month. I had to work really hard to be where I am today. I almost became homeless twice. I wouldn’t recommend anyone starting a business with very little or no capital at all, not even an online business. Luckily it all worked out.
6- The Online Marketing industry is very changing, where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
Indeed, the online marketing industry is changing fast. However, we can simply adapt and change our websites accordingly. It’s a lot of work, and it is never ending. I see myself doing the same thing as I do, just more blogs and more coworkers, and hopefully a better office too.
7- What were some of the biggest challenges you encountered while starting Simon’s Online Marketing Kft?
Every niche online is beyond saturated. The competition is unbelievable. In order to succeed, one needs a great marketable idea, years of experience, specialised knowledge and initial capital. That’s the only way to succeed online nowadays.
8- What are you most excited about at the moment?
I’m excited to turn my websites into a real business, with a real office, and real employees. It was a difficult, and long journey (3 years) but it was worth it. Now we are in a position to truly make a difference, and working in a team is much better than working at home, alone.
9- What can you tell to young people who are pursuing their dreams?
Don’t list to cliches like “Follow your passion.”, or “Never give up on your dreams.”. Following your passion only makes sense if it leads into a sensible direction. What if it isn’t? Do you know? Find out how you can turn your interest into a business. Look at where making money and your passion meet and turn that into a business. Make an actionable, realistic plan, based on well-researched market statistics, trends and numbers. Make sure you break it down into steps, list reasons why it will work, then list reasons why it won’t work and try to solutions. Once you have a clear plan, you can be sure you are heading in the right direction.
10- The last Word or final thoughts?
Reason > emotions. Happiness is earned, you have to work for it. But be glad you live in a country, where you can try to earn your happiness.Thank you for the opportunity!
