Gym memberships can be quite expensive. Many memberships are around the $50/month mark, but can be much more. Even if the cost does not hinder you from joining a gym, the inconvenience might. Perhaps the closest gym is on the other side of town or you simply do not feel like spending minutes of your valuable time commuting to and from the gym. Fortunately, you can get great workouts at home. You can do plenty of exercises without any equipment at all, but having a few basic items really helps you to maximize your workouts at home. 1) Pull-up bar

A pull-up bar is a great tool. Pull-ups are incredible bodyweight exercises, and you can utilize different grip positions when doing pull-ups to work different muscle groups. In addition to the exercise they were built for, pull-up bars also provide opportunity to work your core by doing leg raises and knee raises.

2) Resistance bands

Resistance bands are incredibly versatile and usually quite cheap. Use bands to give you a bit more resistance on push-ups. Wrap the band around something and do chest flies or chest presses. Put the band under your feet and do curls or shoulder presses. The options are practically endless. You can get an unbelievable full body workout using just resistance bands.

3) Dumbbells 

Dumbbells are also very versatile. They can be used for the more obvious exercises like bicep and hammer curls, but they can also be used to work other muscle groups. Doing raises with the dumbbells will work the shoulders, rows will work the back, and extensions will work the triceps. You can also use dumbbells as grips for push-ups or for extra weight when doing squats or step-ups.

4) Sandbag

A sandbag (or a weight or something else that is moderately heavy) is a great tool for adding some extra weight during sit-ups or crunches. This will allow you to build great core strength. The sandbag can also be used for squats and some upper body exercises.

Investing in one or two of these very basic workout items can transform your workouts at home. You may find that you are able to perform workouts at home that are as effective as your gym workouts. Basic exercises with minimal equipment can do wonders for your fitness.
